About California DMV offices
The California Department of Motor Vehicles operates 208 field offices across the state. They handle driver's licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, vehicle registration and titling, and behind-the-wheel driving tests. Most offices are open Monday through Friday, with Tuesday opening later at 9:00 AM.
You can use any California DMV office regardless of where you live. Appointments are strongly recommended — walk-in waits often run 1-2 hours, while appointment holders are usually seen within 15-30 minutes. Book free at the official DMV portal.
Many transactions can be done entirely online at dmv.ca.gov without visiting an office — including most license renewals and registration renewals. A REAL ID or a first-time license requires an in-person visit.
